Is The Use Of Spiritual Tools and Techniques Unnecessary?

Q: Many religions and philosophies have affirmations or mandalas and various tools that I believe make it easier to hear our inner true being over the ego mind. I am getting the understanding from what I read you say this is not necessary and it may just be giving the ego too much attention. Is that correct?

M: No, that’s not what I mean at all. It’s paradoxical in the sense that nothing is needed, but what you are using is what you need to use right now, but that doesn’t mean they have to be used by all if that makes sense.

And whatever you “do”, will eventually be surrendered when you come to the realization that none of your own efforts and trying is necessary for anything. But nothing is “wrong”.

I have personally done it all, all kinds of spiritual meditations and healing modalities, visualizations, different kind of prayers, affirmations, mind power stuff and what not.

Not to attain enlightenment or spiritual awakening, this was before I had the spiritual awakening experience that altered my whole perception of life and myself, it was simply pure burning desire and passion for everything that had to do with personal and spiritual development and growth.

It was at that moment (when the spiritual awakening experience happened) I realized that nothing is needed, and there is no need to tell God anything, absolutely nothing to tell or anything. But up until then, I did it “all”.

After the experience all things fell away, all concepts and beliefs disappeared and was wiped out of my mind, literally, some immediately while others was removed gradually, and it was none of my doing, it was not as if I suddenly made the choice that the interest would not be there, it just happened by itself when the realization happened.

Before that I was passionately into all kinds of things that I could use to manipulate my life experience (for example brain wave meditations etc) and also to control my life and “creating my future” and all that. All with good intentions, coming from a true and pure place in my heart.

I think I may have looked into the mandala thing in the past too, but I can’t even remember anymore, it feels like trying to remember a dream almost.

Absolutely all things that I did use and all the different stuff I did was all a part of my journey and path, and they all had their value and place.

Today the only practice (if it can even be called a “practice”) I do, is stillness and self inquiry. I meditate, that’s all, and I do it in stillness.

I love singing too and love chanting, especially with other people (I don’t get to do that where I live at the moment, but that is something I enjoy a lot), but that is not to attain anything, that is just simply pure delight and enjoyment for me.

With that said; what I am saying is that it’s not necessary to do anything but being still and looking within, but whatever you feel drawn to do, that is what is on your path, and nothing is wrong.

If you feel drawn to various tools like the mandalas etc, then of course that’s what you do.

The most important thing I believe, is to follow your own heart and where it directs you is not where it directs me and so on. There are no rules.

When the realization of Truth hits you, you will see that it has nothing to do with philosophies or religions or any kind of beliefs systems and how Life is going to get you to that realization so to speak has in essence nothing to do with tools.

A person that has no interests in spirituality whatsoever can suddenly experience their true nature, completely out of the blue.

Your question made me remember some Buddha quotes that I think is relevant:

“Don’t blindly believe what I say. Don’t believe me because others convince you of my words.

Don’t believe anything you see, read, or hear from others, whether of authority, religious teachers or texts.

Don’t rely on logic alone, nor speculation. Don’t infer or be deceived by appearances.”

“Do not give up your authority and follow blindly the will of others. This way will lead to only delusion.”

“Find out for yourself what is truth, what is real. Discover that there are virtuous things and there are non-virtuous things.

Once you have discovered for yourself give up the bad and embrace the good.”

That’s what happens, you do all sorts of things, all kinds of techniques and have all kinds of strategies, whatever its is you feel drawn to do, and then you move on from them, and finally the day comes when you realize you didn’t need them to begin with, but at the time they were perfect for you where you were in your own journey.

But if you really needed/need them? No. The true self needs nothing, it already is everything. Just enjoy whatever you’re doing and surrender to Life.

Hope that answers your question.

And of course; inquiring into who it actually is that thinks he/she needs spiritual tools to attain anything is very revealing. There’s someone/thing that is totally and completely untouched by all your human efforts to reach anything. Who is that?
