Basic Plugins For Your New WordPress Blog

Here’s a list of some of the plugins I have used (and use) and that I have been happy with.

What are plugins?

Now that you have set up your new blog, and done some basic things like removed the “Just another WordPress site”-text from your blog, you will need some additional “plugins”.

They are like ‘extra’ things you can add to your blog so it functions better as well as it makes it look better. Plugins enhances the functionality of your website.

There are some plugins that you actually need, and some are just for fun/looks.

I have to confess that I’m a real plugin-o-holic and have more than the recommended number on a site. Some say that 10-12 is enough, while I have around 30 or so… lol:-)

I’m not saying you need them all or that they are the best out there – not at all.

There are literally thousands of plugins to chose from and you should definitely look for plugins that you like and by the time you read this post there might be better ones out there too than the ones I’m suggesting for you.

I’m going to list some here (see pics below, I have ticked the ones I recommend you need) and when you search for them in your back office at WordPress, you can read about them to learn what they do.

And they are all free, so you can test them and see if you like them without having to buy anything, and if you don’t like them; simply uninstall them and delete them and go search for other ones!

To find and add plugins, you go to “plugins” on the left hand-side in your back office, just under “appearance” where you chose your theme earlier. Once there, click ‘add new’ and then ‘install’ and ‘activate’. This should only take a few seconds.

Once they are installed and activated, you can go to ‘settings’ and chose the settings.

Not all plugins needs to be set, but if so, it will only take you a few minutes. I like things that are easy so the ones I have are easy to manage. Some of them needs a little bit more time to set, like the SEO plugin, but you only need to set them ones so it’s worth doing it right from the beginning.

SEO means Search Engine Optimization and helps your blog to be seen and found on Google.

It’s very important to learn more about SEO if you want people to find you more easy.

Anyways; here are some of the plugins I have used:

The MUST HAVE plugins are:

  • Akismet
  • All in One SEO Pack
  • All in One Webmaster
  • Fast Secure Contact Form
  • Google XML Sitemaps
  • W3 Total Cache
  • WordPress Backup (by BTE)
  • WordPress database backup(by Austin Matzko)

Here’s where you can learn more about the two must-have backup plugins that I mentioned:

And you also need some kind of social share button, like Facebook and Twitter (there are numerous to chose from, pick the ones you like best, or try out one of the plugins I use)
