Action, no action, surrender, let go let God… – what’s “right”? Should you just go with the flow, or should you take massive action and go full steam ahead?
Life flows in rhythms – like ebb and flow life goes up and down. Sometimes we are in high gear, doing a lot, and sometimes inspiration ceases into non-action.
How do we know when to do what?
When do we “go for it” and when do we “surrender to a higher power” and let it all go?
And what is the right thing to do when we hear so much about taking action and at the same time we hear that spiritual surrender is the way to go.
We know by listening to our bodies and hearts and honoring our intuitive knowing! Very simple!
You have probably heard the saying that to become an expert in something, or to be truly committed to a cause or goal, requires at least 10 000 hours of study and implementing what we learn, and I believe that is true for most of us if not all. At least if the cause is meaningful in some way.
Not many of us wake up one day with everything served and prepared for us so that we can enjoy the fruits without had put any energy into it.
It’s easy to just float through life, accomplishing nothing. It’s much harder to give yourself to something bigger than yourself because it requires that we sometimes need to let go of the control completely.
Most people want to be in control at all times so it become very hard to let go and trust that someone wiser is holding everything together. (Read: God)
That goes for our spiritual evolution as well as “worldly achievements”. We need to be committed to our spiritual quest.
It’s the same when speaking of religion, you’re not really committed to God if you go to church once a week but are not making a conscious effort to really get to know God in the days in between.
Even Buddha went through this process!
Did you know that before he awakened and became enlightened, he had struggled for six years to find truth? Yes!
And then, after six years when he had tried all kinds of techniques and modalities he could think of to attain enlightenment, he surrendered the whole thing. He let it all go, and that’s when he finally awakened to his True Self.
It was his dedication to his spiritual path that helped him reached the level of consciousness that he reached.
But that had not happened if he had not first struggled all those years because those years taught him about his true nature. Those years of stiving were needed for his awakening before he could really graps the wisdom of Truth.

That’s goes for all of us as well, as contradictory it may seem; we need to desire something so much that we can’t but strive for it, having a burning desire for something, and there will come a time when we have tried and tried and tried some more and when we one day come to the realization that we have to give up the struggle.
If you read about successful people you often hear something similar; that they were just about to “give up” when the breakthrough came.
And most successful people who live the life they came here to live did put at least 10 000 hours of labor into whatever they wanted to achieve before they could enjoy the fruits of what they had put out during all those years.
There are times when we work with the outer world (our careers, success, health, intellectual stuff, spirituality etc), and there comes times when we need to surrender and instead do some serious inner work while God takes care of the outer circumstances. It’s the ebb and flow of life. We know how to go with it if we listen to our bodies and hearts.
10 000 hours of practice by learning new things and by stretching ourselves outside of what we knew and did yesterday, with occasional failing, so called “mistakes”, but with learning from them we will be able to move forward – always willing to try another thing if something is not working.
And when we have tried all we can it’s time to let go and relax into the knowing that something larger can take over.
Provided we do the things we do because we feel called to do them. But even so; even if you did things just for the money, you would STILL have to learn and implement your attained knowledge along the journey. And knowledge comes from practice and study!
Only most people on this particular path (who’s only in it for material gain) never learn to let go, thus unnecessary struggle and illnesses (stress, heart attacks etc) in the world.
When we are driven by Spirit (God) we want to do what we do, even if it takes up all our time and effort.
It’s like breathing to us, we cannot not do it, simple as that.
“Surrendering to God means letting go of attachments to outcomes, but it doesn’t mean that while God is taking care of the world outside of you so to speak, you are spending your time sitting on the couch watching sit-coms. It means that when you leave the outer circumstances to God; you will become sincerely concerned with what happens on the inside. It’s a time of integration and understanding of wisdom. Surrender is not passive at all” ~Maria Erving
