Choose Your Battles Wisely – The Elephant Story
Not Everything Deserves Your Time and Attention
“Once, an elephant took a refreshing bath in a river and then began its journey down the road. As it walked, the elephant noticed a pig covered in mud approaching from the opposite direction. Without hesitation, the elephant stepped aside, allowing the pig to pass by, and then continued on its way.
Later, the pig boasted to its friends, saying, “Look at how important I am! Even the elephant moved aside for me.” Hearing this, the other elephants questioned their friend about why it had moved aside. Was it out of fear? The elephant smiled and explained, “I could have easily crushed the pig, but I chose not to. I am clean, and the pig was filthy. By stepping on it, I would have soiled myself. So, I simply stepped aside.”
To Respond or Not to Respond?
Ask yourself these five questions:
- How much do I really care about this issue? Is it genuinely important to me, or am I simply feeling irritable or annoyed?
- What can I gain from addressing this matter? Is there something meaningful at stake? Is it worth bringing up, or can I let it go and move on?
- What is the cost of engaging in this matter? Is it worth my attention? Or how else could I better use my time and energy?
- Is this a temporary feeling or a recurring issue? Consider if this is a one-time irritation or a consistent problem that needs addressing.
- Am I in the right mindset to address this? Make sure that you are calm, rather than acting out of frustration or anger.
It’s important to enforce boundaries and be assertive when necessary, but maintaining inner peace is crucial. Keep your focus where it matters. Shifting our focus to more productive endeavors helps us choose joy over unnecessary arguments and irritations.
Choose peace and a drama-free life. —Onwards and upwards! 😊
