Reverting back to old ways after a healing session

You might be tempted to go back to old ways after a healing session

The temptation might come up, or the urge, to revert back to old ways of being, and it’s important to understand that it’s just one of the effects of how the healing process sometimes can unfold.

The immediate result of a healing session can be an instant relief from whatever it is that we have worked on in our session but something that is important to mention as well is the effect healing has on your consciousness.

Yes, you may feel empowered, elevated, lighter, clearer and more peaceful and so on directly after a session but then the next day when you wake up you may find yourself feeling lethargic and maybe even a bit agitated.

If you do, don’t worry!

Healing is energy work so when it stirs up your consciousness so to speak, it can bring up old memories for example (as I mentioned in this article), and also old ways of being and behaving.

Old behavior and thinking patterns are stirred up in order to be released and it can be some old-age habits that comes up to the surface that you thought you were done with years ago.

It could be about old fears or unproductive and unhealthy behaviors from the past that resurface.

This is why self-awareness is important

When you have old stuff showing up that has to do with your old ways of being, know that it’s just patterns that has been re-stimulated (or stirred up) by the healing energies that are currently working on you.

The healing energy works very intensely on you not only during the healing session but also for at least 2-3 days after the session as well and can continue working on you for a long time afterwards.

So old stuff can come up, old levels of consciousness can try to pull you back again, and if they succeed then simply become aware that they did and refocus.

Here’s a few examples of what could happen:

  • You suddenly find yourself with a beer in your hand even if you were done with alcohol ages ago.
  • You suddenly find yourself texting with and old flame of yours that you broke up with years ago because they were abusive to you.
  • Or you suddenly behave like a little insecure child around your mother again even if you have no unresolved issues with her anymore. 

And so on, you get the point. 

If those things happen, know that it’s just stirred up old levels of consciousness that are making themselves known.

Things can be stirred up from a deep, deep, place within your consciousness and it happens only so that it can be released once and for all.

So don’t fret!

If you for a moment revert to your old habits, fears, or ways of behaving, simply acknowledge this and pull yourself back up from there (from the lower level of consciousness).

It does not always necessarily mean that you still have things to work on or resolve, it simply means that consciousness has been stirred up and that old energy is being released from a deeper level than before.

What is happening is that there’s a shift that happens, that must happen, and that energetic shift (consciousness shift) releases remnants of old energy as it’s replaced with the new, fresh, free-flowing energy that you received from the session so it’s all part of the healing process.

The energetic shift creates a purge where you release the old.

So if you find yourself chatting with an old friend for example that was toxic and that you had ended your relationship with a long time ago, then simply acknowledge your mistake of reverting back and once again cut the ties to the toxic relationship.

Drop it like a hot potato!

Take action immediately to release the old level of consciousness from getting a hold on you again because it still has the power to pull you back if you don’t stop it (this is how a relapse can happen).

The old energetic pathways in your brain and mind can easily be reignited if you’re not aware of this and it has the potentiality of pulling you back to the old ways. 

If an old addictive behavior comes up for example, become aware of it and once you’re aware, stop doing what you’re doing and get back to the higher place again.

Immediately stop doing the self-sabotaging things that you’re doing and get yourself back up again.

That’s all you have to do before the new energy from the healing session can again take hold and thus lift you higher than where you’ve been before (to a new level of consciousness).

It only takes a few seconds to do this so don’t worry about the power of the old because the healing energy is stronger than that. 

These things can happen so it’s important to know that it’s all part of the release process where harmful blocks that have been holding you back on a deep level of consciousness are being cleared out and let go of.

You will feel a relief

When you refocus and get back to the healthier state of consciousness you will feel a huge relief and sometimes you can even laugh out loud because you see so clearly how you were pulled back to the old.

In other words, you’ll come to see/understand the mechanics of this phenomena and then the next time it happens, if it happens, you will be more aware and can more easily go through the energetic shifts. 

And if guilt or shame comes up because you for one moment reverted to the old unhealthy ways, don’t get involved in any of that.

Let it go and give yourself a pat on the back instead for having had the necessary awareness to refocus back on what really matters (which is the new energy).

This awareness then of course only gives you even more insight and depth to your continuous spiritual and personal growth and healing journey.

So if you are experiencing these things after a healing session, relax, it’s part of the process (not for all, but it can happen to some) and once you let go of the old you will instantly be empowered by the new.

    Thank you, Maria. I had my first Distant healing session 2 weeks ago and was disappointed that I didn’t feel anything different or anything happening during or right after the session. Later in the day my husband asked how it went, and I was surprised by how angry I felt…tantrum angry. I ranted on how of course I didn’t experience anything different, and I can be sure that if it is something that I really want, God will see to it that I don’t get it…and on and on. Then the anger moved into self-pity about everything past and present, and from there, feeling the heaviness of a rather challenging month, and how I worked at applying what I have learned spiritually and practicing advice from you, and how hard it had been. And then something great happened. As each emotion came up, and I was deep in the middle of them for sure, the feeling just vanished. Like bubbles popping…just gone. I felt “full” inside and couldn’t get angry or sad if I had tried.

    I had also been having one of the worse bouts of fear and anxiety triggered by an incident at work that I can ever remember. Practicing your advice and what I’ve learned spiritually helped a great deal. But the fear and anxiety kept coming back…it got so bad I thought of getting outside help. But after the healing session, it has left. I don’t think about it, I don’t worry “what if,” it’s just not there anymore.

    And after yesterday’s healing session I took my dog for a walk, and my attitude and the chatter in my head couldn’t have been more opposite of the what the healing session was for. There is an inclination to want to shame myself or feel guilty so your article is really helpful. And after last session, I feel more inclined to just trust the healing process…thank you so much for these sessions and the “after care!” I’ve also been reading a lot of your articles and they are so relevant and helpful!

    I’m glad to hear that the article was helpful to you and I think it was meant to be written for you because it came through me just when I was about to log off for the day and as I wrote it my intuition told me that someone needed to hear the message.

    As I read your comment I had to chuckle at one point, the point where you mentioned the anger tantrum you had.

    I remember I had a huge healing cleansing process once where I too went through moments of being absolutely furious and for the silliest reason I almost let my neighbor have a taste of my anger.

    If he had been home he would have been the one who would have been in the focus of my anger tantrum.

    Luckily I had professional and experienced people (healers and therapists) around me at that time who could guide me through it.

    Afterwards I could laugh at it and I hope you can too with your rants and anger tantrums and I hope they have subsided now.

    If not then self-awareness is always helpful so now that you know what’s happening it’s easier to go through it, and the easier it is the faster it goes before you become free from it.

  5. Another thing I want to mention is that sometimes the opposite of what you asked for (intended the healing session for) happens directly after the session.

    Or things get worse before it gets better (for example physical pain or an illness can get worse before it gets better).

    The main thing to remember is that it doesn’t last forever, it’s just a part of the healing process (sometimes it’s called a “healing crisis”) and will soon be a distant memory as you have risen above it and transcended it.

    Thank you for your reply and asking how things are today.

    Usually driving to work in the morning, my mind is engaged in numerous endless chatter, running commentaries on how I feel, what I’m worried about, what I want, what I don’t want, what I’m afraid of, who or what I’m angry at, etc. And I feel all this stuff in my gut as well.

    This morning however, aside from feeling energetically strong (an inner strength, high energy), I was aware of how I didn’t want to participate in this mind-numbing behavior. And it wasn’t that I was “willing” it, it felt like a natural desire to not engage in it. And for right now, I feel the same natural desire to not engage in any negative thoughts or comments about anyone or anything…quite lovely, and quite amazing….

    It certainly is helpful in moving forward in this journey…I can’t wait for the next session. It really is a blessing!

    Wow! I can even begin to tell you how badly, I needed to hear this upon awakening. I made a verbal commitment yesterday to your 6 week class and not even two hours later it felt like all “hell” broke loose. I was bombarded with information from a loved one that could or could not affect me. But, of course my mind was having its way with me before I knew what was happening. I felt that all familiar anxiety rising up from my old ways of living and existing in the world. Geez! I was astounded and frightened at the same time. My mind started creating all these ridiculous scenarios, fear nearly buckled my knees. In the midst of the panic, I thought of you and the commitment I made to myself and within moments (thankfully), something in me just flipped from inside. I became acutely aware of the negative stories playing in my head, about myself, to myself. It wasn’t anything outside of me causing me distress, it was coming from me. I was so happy that for just a few moments I was able to “FEEL” a split or separation of sorts and became an observer of my thoughts. It’s stayed like that for the rest of the evening. In and out of awareness. I’m still holding my own. The attacks feel extremely real, but it’s okay, I now know it’s all coming from me and only me. Thank you Maria for sharing your experience, your insight, honesty and clarity. 😊

  11. @Morgan: Yes, awareness of what they are and where they come from.

    So instead of automatically jump on board on whatever stories the mind tells you (mind chatter about this and that); confront them.

    Instead of allowing yourself to be pulled into fear, worry, anger, imaginary conclusions, drama etc, stop, and turn towards it and say something like this:

    “Okay, let’s look at this. Let’s look at where the fear comes from and if it’s really something to be afraid of” and then you do that.

    I help my clients with this in sessions but to share the short version here you simply start dissecting the story to see if it’s valid or not.

    For example if worry about money comes up;

    “How am I going to pay next months rent, oh my God, .. ” and then the mind chatter begins and the pictures of doom and gloom starts to bombard you and the imaginary conversations escalate etc etc.

    You know what I mean 🙂 The chatter begins and it begins hard, really bombarding you and you might even get sick to your stomach of fear and worry.

    So here’s what you can do if this happens:

    Don’t run away from it but move towards it.

    “Let me look closely at you FEAR, let me see what is so scary about you!”

    Take a pen and a notebook and write your fear down.

    “I’m afraid I will not be able to pay rent this month”

    and then write down the fearful story your ego has made up about it.

    It could be for example:

    “I will become homeless and live on the streets”.

    And then look at Reality.

    Where are you now? Probably sitting in your kitchen drinking coffee and all is well, right?

    Yes, you have rent to pay, that’s a fact, but the fearful story is not a fact, it’s a story and you don’t have to believe it just because it’s thrown at you by your ego.

    Now write down at least 5 other kinds of scenarios that could happen.

    For example:

    1.) I might get some new clients coming in later this week that brings in the extra cash I need.

    2.) It’s only the 2 of December, a lot of positive things can happen before it’s time to pay rent! I might even get an unexpected Christmas bonus or monetary gift.

    and so on.

    Every scenario is a possibility, so ask yourself why you chose to believe the worst case scenario.

    When there are so many other perspectives you can have to the same situation!

    And realize that the fear and worry comes from believing in one perspective over another but the fact remains ‘naked’ (neutral) and unaffected by your thoughts about it.

    Yes, rent has to be paid (=the fact/Reality) but do you have to allow yourself to be drawn into any fears about it..? No.

    You can also choose to believe that something will come up, that some positive things happens at work for example that will bring in more money to you and if you had chosen to believe THAT perspective instead of the one your ego gave you you would have remained in peace.

    There are so many different possibilities available!

    But by honing in on one single imagination the ego throws at you you block the other (more positive) ones because of the fear it creates in you (that you allow it to create in you).

    But when you open up to all the other possibilities that are available then you’re able to handle any challenges in a much better and healthier (and peaceful) way.

    So in short;

    Challenge/confront the fears, worries and all the drama and imaginary conversations in your head and ask yourself if they are really true or if it’s just one of many, many other alternative perspectives you could choose to have.

    When you do this you will even be able to laugh out loud because you will see so clearly how the ego voice in your head operates and functions and the more you become aware of it, the less you can believe it.

    And the less you believe in it and in its stories, the quieter it gets.

    In essence you’re feeding the fear by believing in it but once you stop feeding it it will begin to subside.

    Then the voice subsides and gets quieter and quieter and can you remain in perfect peace, even through the ups and downs of life 🙂

  12. @W: I think you’ll benefit from the reply I just wrote to Morgan above your comment.

    Read it and see if it applies to you 🙂

    There’s an article on my website where I wrote about the ego attack that happens when it’s exposed to light so what happened to you is what happens to most.

    Most people though choose to go with the ego voice, totally oblivious of the fact that it is deceiving them.

    The awareness you have now is going to help you move beyond it.

    Every time a person is about to make a choice that will alter their life in a some way (transformational way) the old false self will reappear and come up very strongly against their new choice.

    This is the threshold challenge, and there will be doubt, fear and insecurity coming up but then the moment also comes when you decide to go for it, whatever it is (unless you let your fear stop you).

    And when you do, your life opens up in new ways and new directions can be shown to you, but they can’t come before you have made the choice of moving on into the unknown.

    It’s a process that we all go through at times when we are about to make commitments or changes in our life that will alter the course of it in some way.

    Trust your gut-feeling, that’s always my advice.

    Sometimes it’s very clear to us that something is right and sometimes it might tell us that the timing is not right, or that you need more information and so on.

    If so, go with it, trust yourself and do the thing you feel inclined to do, knowing that it’s Life who wants to experience and do the things through you and as you.

    But never let the fearful voice inside your head stop you from taking a step into the unknown that will help you grow, evolve and transform, never let it rule your life.

    This is your life, remember that, it does not belong to the voice in your head that only wants to keep you small and fearful (because that’s where it feels safe; in the familiar status quo).

    I never thought I’d hear myself say this, especially after last month which felt like pure hell, but I actually feel a sense of gratitude while writing this after reading your answer.

    I don’t think I would have the level of awareness I do now of how I let my thoughts and feelings go unchecked and how tolerant I am of not only the thoughts that scare me, but all the other ones as well. It can be an opportunity to grow instead of letting it shut me down.

    Here’s another question for you Maria, should you feel inclined to answer! When I think about what you’ve written and what ACIM teaches, I think about how seeing through the illusions of ego is the awakening (remembering, as you say). How do you see energy healing in this context? Could it be argued that “healing” is just another illusion of ego since healing is not really necessary if nothing is broken and there a way for us to stay entrenched in our illusions that we need anything outside of ourselves? Moreover, if we get help from outside energy healers, are we shortchanging ourselves of the opportunity to break free of our minds–basically, are we using a crutch that will come back to bite us later? (By the way, I use energy healing for myself and others and find it SO helpful, so I’m really very curious)

    Before I respond to your question though I want to point out something;

    ACIM is not the Truth, it’s a teaching, a book, but not to be taken as The Truth (just like any other book or teaching).

    No book or teaching is The Truth and anyone who says they have the key or secret to life should be someone you run from as fast as you can.

    On our journey we go through all kinds of things, we have all kinds of different experiences and meet lots of different situations and people.

    We learn, we read, listen, and do all kinds of things in order to try to understand and make sense of this world, our life and ourselves, and that’s all part of being a curious and healthy human being.

    But once someone stays with a concept stating “this is the Truth”, they are starting to quickly decline and die spiritually, and I don’t mean dying in the ‘good way’, in the die-before-you-die kind of way.

    Truth is not a concept.

    It can’t be taught, sold or written/spoken about in a way that would make other people ‘get it’.

    There was a time in my past too when I was all into ACIM, but then I moved on, and I suggest you move on too if that is what you feel you feel drawn to do.

    If you want to ‘progress’ the tools and techniques has to be left behind at some point.

    You can’t take any of it with you if you want to awaken, but you should also not let anything go until the time has come and when its authentic.

    My point is that you should never stay with anything, never hold on, but always be open for more, because the ultimate knowing of life is never to be found in any books or teachings.

    They can be used as pointers, and pointing indicates that there’s movement.

    That someone/something is pointing, and then you start to move towards that which is pointed towards.

    You don’t stay and stare at the finger, admiring it for ‘knowing’.

    To respond to your question;

    Even if I have at times used the word “energy” when describing the healing I do, I don’t call it “energy healing”.

    It’s not energy healing, it’s simply healing that is uniquely “channeled” through this thing called “Maria”; it doesn’t’ have a name.

    I’m not a fan of that word either (“channel”) because it sounds so new agey, but the truth is that everyone is channeling something.

    A singer channels songs, a writer words and so on.

    It’s all about consciousness expressing itself and the form it takes in each individual which can be anything.

    You’re a channel too of something, and if you have a husband and children they too are channels in their own ways, all benefiting each other in some way.

    It’s not “spiritual” and it’s not about “energy” as such. It’s just Life doing its thing.

    I provide and offer healing sessions, but it’s not really “energy healing”, it’s not even about “healing” another person.

    Some people help heal the body, such as doctors, health coaches and so on, but my focus is on the spiritual life, but it has nothing to do with “fixing” someone as I don’t see anything ‘wrong’ with them.

    But the most important thing to understand in all this, is that it’s not a “belief”.

    I don’t believe that you are whole already, I see it clearly, and I see clearly what stands in the way for you to see it clearly too.

    It’s merely a veil and it’s called ‘the ego’.

    It’s important to look at anything through a pair of clear, open eyes and only accept a direct experience with anything.

    In my work I see (=have a direct experience of it) healing being a great tool that I use to help others move forward in their lives and I see it’s very helpful to people.

    Again, to go back to your other comment that I just replied to (this one);

    Anyone who had an accident for example where they broke their leg would without a doubt seek medical help to get it healed!

    Illusion or not. And it’s not what you think it is.

    The illusion you see through when you awaken, is not the illusion that your ego imagines it to be.

    So don’t even try to understand it from that perspective because the ego that seeks to know what it is, will never be able to experience it or know it.

    All the ego can ever manage to come up with are more concepts and spiritually sounding ideas and then if something sounds convincing enough, they adopt it and make it “true”.

    Instead look into the one who imagines the illusion and look into the imagination about it.

    Not illusion itself, but the imagination of illusion, and who the one is that has it.

    Lastly, anything that is used pass its usefulness becomes a crutch.

    As I mentioned before, as you progress in the awakening process you will let go more and more, it’s really all about letting go actually.

    Letting go, unlearning, undoing.

    What you use on the way is useful up to a point, but any tools and techniques, teachings and books should be cast aside and let go of when you’re done with them.

    Just because you benefit from healing at one point in your life doesn’t mean you should keep having healing sessions indefinitely.

    Same with a book; just because you find it helpful and insightful at one point in your life, does not mean that you should build your whole life around it.

    Everything is only for a moment in your life and then you move on to the next moment and then the next, always staying present in the Now.
