How do you survive on the spiritual path if you don’t have a job?

How to support yourself if you don’t have a job?

“I am so very intrigued by your path and very excited about your book.

I’d love to know also about the logistics of your journey, i.e. how you supported yourself without having a job.

My reason for this is partially selfish, as I may be losing my job soon.

I have chosen to accept this inevitability (if indeed it is an inevitability) as I have clutched on to my job for too long and it has caused me immense frustration.

However, although I don’t need much money to survive (I’m totally uninterested in material possessions now), I am worried about how I’ll feed myself and pay my bills if I do lose my job, whilst also being quite excited about the prospect of dedicating more of my time and energy to this path.

Could you guide me towards any of your articles that discuss your experience in more detail?”

My Reply:

When you asked me this I didn’t even know where to begin.

I might have to write that book after all! LOL 😀

There are so many things I could share with you to answer your question but each answer has a lot of sub-stories around them etc etc, so I can’t really give you an answer right now that would be short and sweet or even to fit into an article.

But I can tell you that I have always been supported on my journey.

In Norway there were times when I lived on welfare, and sometimes I had temporary jobs here and there (a very long time ago, here’s an example).

And I’ve been invited to come and stay with people for free on my travels to the USA for months at a time,

I’ve done house and pet sitting, I have even been given apartments to live in for free etc (even lived in a hotel for free!) but there’s so much more to tell that I just can’t share in one article because, as I said before, there’s so many stories around each story.

But I will let this simmer in my mind a bit and maybe there’s a book coming after all 🙂

Let’s focus on you now.

You wrote that you’re worried about losing your job and not being able to pay your bills and so on.

And I hate to tell you this, but yes, you might lose your job and other things too.

I did (I lost everything; income, home, possessions, friends, ..), and I have even lived in a caravan in the middle of the winter with a hole in the roof!), but if you trust your path, you will be fine.

All will be taken care of.

And please don’t be alarmed, but instead stay in the present moment and enjoy what you have.

A personal story;

It was one of the worst crisis’s in my life when I lost my home (you can find some articles here from that time), there was so many tears that I cannot even begin to tell you, but I know that if I would ever lose anything again (although I don’t see it like that anymore), I would not have the same experience as I did then.

Because of how things unfolded from there.

It unfolded in amazing ways, magical ways, and I can see now how that crisis had to happen in my life and why it happened in the way it did.

I have had clients too who have had similar experiences as well and their lives have after the crisis of losing their homes (or jobs) also unfolded in amazing ways.

Please don’t be frightened about this.

Whatever challenges that might happen, you will be alright, and you will in the process get a completely different relationship with Life and you will come to see how it works “in mysterious ways”.

I have been so blessed on my path, and even the time when I lived in a caravan in Norway in the middle of the winter (a little bit about that here), I felt immense gratitude towards Life.

I used to cry tears of joy because of the relationship that I had with Life, and how it always helped me.

After a few months of living in the caravan I was given an apartment, just out of the blue, that I could move into.

That then became the home for me where I lived about 5 years when I went through the worst part of my awakening process.

It was at times pure hell. Not the situation in itself, but my inner processes.

As hellish as it was, it was also the most blessed times as I mentioned in some of my articles.

I was put there by Life to be isolated from the world so that I could go through my awakening process in solitude.

So that was a great blessing to me.

And when I lost my home in Spain, I started doing house and pet sitting and came to live in absolutely stunning (multi million dollar) homes all around Costa del Sol, all for free.

And when I went to India; I didn’t even have enough money to survive there, but every time I needed something, someone would send me a donation of the exact sum I needed (without them actually knowing that I needed that exact sum!).

Or if there were things that I needed, it was all given to me when I needed it without me having to ask for it.

I was even upgraded many times in the places I stayed, also for free.

At that point in my life I was already done with my awakening process so there was no fear left in me, or worry about how I was going to survive etc.

Trust Life’s amazing ways as it has ways you know nothing about.

Let it take you on this journey.

Life never ceases to amaze and surprise me in wonderful ways, it’s incredibly magical how it works.

I knew (and know) that if Life wants me to go somewhere or do something, Life also takes care of everything I need.

I’m incredibly blessed and absolutely in the most amazing flow there is, and I’m here because I have trusted, and because of my dedication to Truth.

I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing this Life is if you just trust it.

I would never ever again be able to not trust it, it’s completely 100% impossible.

Life has amazing ways to take care of you if you just let it.

Because this is not your choice, this path, it’s Life that has chosen this path for you, so if you just trust it, it will take care of you.

And about me living in the caravan; I wasn’t freezing there, even that Life had taken care of.

I was given a heater and gas-heaters so I was always comfortably warm.

And the times I’ve lived with friends or with someone as I’ve journeyed forward on my path, it has always been good (although not always without challenges) and then at some point you always feel that the next direction is given so there’s a natural transition to the new.

And even about this transition phase there are so many things I can share with you, but that too would be a whole article in itself LOL!

A new phase is opening up in your life.

There’s always a transition phase and because of my experiences I also know how they unfold as I have learned to read the patterns of Life.

So that’s why it’s easier to share these things when I’m actually speaking with someone face to face, because there are so many details and so on that means a lot in the sense of how to understand your individual path better.

So if we were to talk, I would be able to help you more because I would know exactly where you are and what’s probably unfolding for you.

I know all these things because I’ve been through them, and many people are going through similar things and because of my own direct experiences, I’m able to help them.

Hope this was helpful to you.

And again, please don’t worry.

Trust Life.

That’s the most important thing there is on this journey.

To not be afraid, but to trust with all your heart.

You are loved beyond measure.

trust your path
Trust your path. It chose You.

Focus on the right things

Here’s an article that came to mind that I wrote (when living in Norway) after been in contact with someone who was always complaining about their life, who was full of fear and worry and who was never doing the inner work I advised them to do.

I remember they were saying things like “it’s easy for you to say! You have money! You don’t have to worry!” when in reality I was living on welfare and was struggling to even have my website up and running!

So while I was spending all my energy and time on my spiritual journey, this person had all their focus on their fears and worries.

The person was constantly writing me at this time and I Skyped with them a few times as well, and the thing is that they actually were better off than me financially!

But all they could do was to complain and feel sorry for themselves and waste their time on worrying (even about their retirement and this person was in my age!) and being afraid of moving forward by doing the inner work required on the spiritual path.

It’s important to always use your time and energy wisely.

So it’s really all about where you put your focus and about learning to trust life, that’s the learning experience in all this that is happening in your life as well.

But not all are willing to do that. They rather listen to their fears instead.

There was a time in the beginning when I was a scared too.

I hated being there in the middle of nowhere having no friends, no money and so on.

And my God did I try to get away from there!

I hated being on welfare and I was desperate for my independence so I looked for work everywhere, not only where I lived but all around the world.

I applied for 1000’s of jobs (yes, THOUSANDS), all over the world only to be rejected over and over again.

There was no way I could get away from there, and when I came to the realization that I was put there for a reason, then I also realized that it was a blessing.

But there was a lot of resistance in the beginning, but then when I realized the blessing of me being there, of course everything then changed and my experience of life become completely different.

Here it is, hope it can bring some comfort to you to know that whatever challenges you might face on the spiritual path, they are only ever there as long as there is resistance and/or fear and worry.

When there is trust and dedication, the experience becomes a blessing.

Please also understand that the reason I struggled so much was because of the BELIEFS I had at that time (it’s ALWAYS about beliefs). Had I known what I know today, my path would have, of course, looked very different. That’s why it’s so important to identify and release yourself from any beliefs and belief-systems that hold you back – That’s what sets us free; the freedom from belief, where you live in the vibration of Truth rather than the limited self. So when you work on releasing fear, worry, beliefs, and other false ideas that don’t serve you, then your outer life will change too to match your internal shifts.

Change your beliefs, change your life
What’s between you and a better life is merely a BELIEF. Life unfolds from our own consciousness, and belief is the glue that holds it all together. – Maria Erving

Something happened within me that I cannot explain

During and after our session, something happened within me that I cannot explain nor would it even make sense to anyone. There was a part of me that felt my being been taken over by a real peacefulness that I’ve never encountered before. Sounds odd but it’s the truth.

Transformational Prayer Process by Maria Erving

  1. Jenny

    Hi Maria,
Thank you so much for your article. Since you wrote your article, I have indeed lost my job. I could sense it coming, and when it did, I felt immense relief. In the week since it happened though, i have gone back and forth between sheer terror of what I’ll do next, where my next paycheck is coming from etc. and sheer delight that I am no longer burdened by that job and have freedom to rest and pursue other things. I guess, unlike you, I do not fully trust my path yet. I am anxious that bad things will happen. I fear that if I trust too much and become complacent, I will end up being jobless for longer than if I anxiously and proactively seek another opportunity! You mentioned that you lived in solitude in your apartment in Norway for 5 years. I wondered how you managed, as this seems a long time to go without company or other people. I would love to know more about this. Your article inspired me and made me aware that I have not fully surrendered to life, that I do not fully trust life. I will need to relinquish control and take more risks to be sure that life is cradling and protecting me, as everything feels quite uncertain and scary at the moment! Thank you for sharing your experiences with me xxx

  2. Hi Jenny,

    How are you??

It’s been a few years now since I wrote this article, so if you receive a notification about this comment, I’d love to hear from you!

I’m sure others too who read this article is curious too to hear how things unfolded for you.

Maybe you too have an inspiring story to share 😊

  3. Jenny

    Hi Maria,
Thank you so much for reaching out, I still visit your website for guidance from time to time. Certainly, since we last spoke my path has intensified. I can only describe it as a push and pull between the ego and the Truth. I have suffered many mental difficulties: anxiety, depression and intrusive thoughts, that to me are indicative of the ego’s unwillingness to surrender. It doesn’t give up easily! Occasionally, I will experience the beauty and unmatched peace of being with God, surrendering everything. However, those moments are too brief. This path and the Truth remains the most important thing in my life but I struggle daily with resistance and fear. Thank you again for reaching out, your words are so comforting and your posts so insightful xx

  4. Good to hear back from you Jenny! I’m so sorry to hear you’ve suffered mentally with anxiety and depression etc. though 💜

I hope you’re getting help to resolve whatever issues you’re struggling with?

Not sure if you’ve read my articles about surrender? In case you haven’t, here’s some of them:

The act of surrender can be used for many things, you can for example hand over your struggles to the divine within and around you and ask it to help you and it will.

Something or someone will then come your way and as you act on the guidance and nudges, your world will expand and open up and things will begin to improve.

Here’s another article that came to mind that can help you release some of the fear you might still struggle with:

There’s an exercise there that you can do that is very effective in helping releasing fear and worry.

    You can do this! 💪

  5. Another thing Jenny, that is crucially important is to increase and grow in self-awareness.

Otherwise you will be battling with your ego forever and never become free from it and wake up to who you really are.

Here’s a good place to start:

And please also remember this; that the more resistance you experience, the closer to Truth you are!

The resistance; that’s the ego freaking out, so keep moving in the direction of whatever it is trying to sway you away from doing.

Be very interested in what the ego is trying to hide from you when you feel resistance – Use it to your advantage!

“Oh, that’s interesting. Since I feel so much resistance about this (whatever it is), there must be something about it that will be helpful to me, otherwise the ego wouldn’t protest.”

The more Light you’re exposed to, the more the ego is freaking out, so see it as a good sign, that you’re on to something good.

  6. Jenny

Thank you Maria, I will certainly read your articles about surrender. I have struggled to learn how to surrender, but increasingly realise it’s more about not doing anything, than doing something. I agree with you that the more resistance, the closer you are to the Truth. I will never give up, but I can say wholeheartedly that the ego has put me through absolute hell on this journey, to the point where at times I have said out loud ‘just take me God, be done with me’. I have truly felt that dying was preferable to the ego’s torment at times. It seems to ebb and flow: the more suffering I am experiencing, the more I am propelled towards the Truth.

Thank you for your beautiful replies, and for your encouragement. I look forward to delving into more of your articles xxx

  7. Joy

    Very helpful article!

I have a question, Maria. What does it mean to put one’s trust in the path? You say that everything will be taken care of but I’m just remembering the many people out there who didn’t survive but perished. The many homeless people out there that eventually died of starvation. Nobody offered them free shelter. Things never fell into place for them. Are things meant to fall into place for all of us? Or just some of us?

So what does that indicate? Does ‘trusting the path’ mean that everything material will be taken care of, or does it mean that whatever difficulties we’re going through will eventually lead us to fulfil our divine purpose in life? Maybe some of us are meant to perish out on the streets, starving, panting. And somewhere along our journey, we end up fulfilling our purpose without even realizing it. That perhaps materially, maybe we ARE meant to suffer forever. That things won’t fall into place for the majority of us.

    Does that make sense?

  8. Hi Joy, thanks for commenting!

It has to do with many things, like for example developing trust and faith, having the right mindset, thinking aright (in alignment with God, not present circumstances), actively working on releasing any fears and limiting beliefs that hold you back, doing the inner work in regards to your consciousness and shifting it away from the false and limiting to the true and real etc.

In my own case I ‘had to’ lose my home and become penniless so that I could awaken to the truth that all things unfold from my own consciousness, and my concept of God for example got in the way too at that time in my life,

because there was a sense of separation; meaning, me not fully knowing who I am and putting my trust in something ‘out there’ as opposed to my own inner power, which IS God.

Most people don’t know their power, and if they don’t and they only ‘see’ what’s in front of them (their current life experience/circumstances), then they cannot shift to a different reality, unless there’s a divine intervention of course, which depends on your own individual path in life, the things you’re meant to learn etc.

Our challenges in life is most often about fear, for all of us, however it may manifest in our life, – Fear is at the base/core of it, every time.

My biggest block was fear of not having enough money/living in lack, it had to do with survival, so in my case, and because of my role in this life as a teacher, I had to lose everything in order to learn that I AM the operating power, not something outside of me.

It forced me to look at what was holding me back and helped me release fears and beliefs that were decades old and still running my life, and then as the unconscious/subconscious beliefs were exposed in the process, I was able to work through them and become free.

And now, thanks to that experience I had and went through, I can now help others become free too so that they don’t have to experience those things themselves.

So I have zero fear around money now, and I have found the God within me, so fear is no longer a possibility.

You can’t be afraid and worried once you’re in alignment with the Divine flow of Life and your inner being/higher self, and that which you call “God”.

It’s IN God you have peace, it IS your strength and power.

Fear is always from the ego, and peace is always from God, so whatever a person goes through in life, as we all do, we can always growth through them with a sense of peace (the kind of peace that passeth all understanding).

You wrote “Things never fell into place for them. Are things meant to fall into place for all of us? Or just some of us?”.

    For all of us!

And it has everything to do with coming into alignment, but for as long as there is fear, worry, frustration, a sense of hopelessness etc, the reality a person is experiencing will have to continue.

But when there is an internal shift and the shift takes you back to your Self, then the outer circumstances will change too.

Prayer is enormously powerful too, and can cut through even the worst of scenarios and literally lift you out of an unhealthy situation, but How we pray is crucial and most people don’t know how to pray aright.

Here’s a link to some of my articles about prayer:

Prayer has to be with sincerity and positive belief, and we don’t know how those people prayed for help for example.

I know in my own experience that when the prayers are more like begging and pleading type, our prayers go unanswered, but if they are said with thanksgiving and positive expectation (which has to do with your own sense of worthiness and other things), then they are answered (in due time, which requires the development of faith and trust),

So you see it takes some deep inner work and commitment to untangle yourself from the old levels of being and consciousness, while having a vision for your future and setting your mind on That instead of your current reality.

The inner changes the outer, and this is true for each and every one of us, and if we only knew this, everybody’s life would be better.

None of us are meant to ‘perish out on the streets, starving, panting’, but most people are not awakened to their true nature, and the world is still running on ego consciousness, and fear is prevalent and the predominant state that most people live in, most without even being aware of it.

Fear and worry keeps us blocked from the true, abundant, and harmonious life that we all are meant to live.

Things WILL fall into place for every person who lives their life in alignment with God and their higher self, it can’t be in another way.

Here’s an article you might like and find helpful:

    Life is all consciousness expressed.

Only the ego, or false self, creates and manifests limitations, lack, fear and restrictions, but once the ego is seen through and you have unblocked yourself from false beliefs, then life opens up as it’s meant to be lived.

We already have everything; everything already exists, but if we’re not in tune with it it’s not possible for us to perceive it with our awareness and then we always seem to be on the outside looking in, not being able to ‘access’ it, even if we want to (so desire is important, but belief is more important, because it is what holds up the construction we currently have of Reality).

Many people’s eyes and focus is most of the time not on the things they want but on the lack of it, the opposite of them, and that’s why they just create more and more of the same, so there has to be an internal shift before we see the external change, both in our individual life as well as globally.

Learning about the mind and energy states should be something kids learn in school already, but that’s not the way we are programmed.

We are programmed away from our own innate power and intuitive knowing, and pushed into believing our five senses more, and the logical, reasoning mind, which is very limited and small compared to the True Self, and the life and reality that the higher mind and our inner guidance can lead us to.

But most people don’t go with the flow of their own life’s energy, they follow their fears instead, they believe in That voice more, simply because they are identifying themselves with the small self (unknowingly and subconsciously) rather than the Great Self that lives inside of them.

I could go on and on about this, but hope this was helpful to you and that you have more clarity and some new insights to ponder!

Here’s some links to articles that can be helpful to anyone wanting to break free from the old, limiting and restricting levels of consciousness from where the ego/limited self operates:

Thank You… Really Enjoyed Your Article… This Confirmation and Inspiration For My Spiritual Awakening Journey… Much Gratitude… I Trust You Are Constanstly Evolving… Sending Love and Light

  11. Daizy

I just stumbled across this article, and I must say I give you so much gratitude and thanks, Maria, for writing this.

I was a mother of 4. I do not have much working experience, and all my life I’ve only had three jobs that did not even last 3 months. I was always lucky and blessed financially because of government assistance, as well as help from my parents and my ex-husband, but both my ex-husband and my father passed away in the same year, 4 months apart.

I was married for 10 years; I was a stay-at-home mom, and I enjoyed it.

My marriage ended because the relationship was abusive. Here comes years later; I am on my journey, I believe about 3 years now. I lost my eldest daughter on Thanksgiving 2020 in a horrific car accident. She and her fiancé died on impact. That shocked my whole world.

Two of my other kids were in the ICU for 30 days, so aside from dealing with the death, I had to deal with that as well. I am an only child. We lost our apartment because I couldn’t afford to pay it, and unfortunately, we ended up in a shelter. It has been really, really tough, but my faith and my hope and my trust in the divine and all the higher powers in the heavenly realms are helping me.

But it’s not easy because everyone keeps telling me, “You need to get a job, you need to get a job,” which is understandable. But what they don’t understand is that I don’t want a regular 9:00 to 5:00. I want a job I would enjoy doing and part-time. I have been suffering from depression for the past 20 years, maybe.

After losing my daughter and starting my spiritual journey, going into such shock, also having to deal with kids who are grown and who don’t understand and are constantly making you feel like the bad person, it’s been hard.

I don’t ever comment on people’s articles, but after reading your article, I know that I’m not the only one who feels like this, and I know there is support out there for people who are on a spiritual path.

I am not a person who likes to fight and argue. My ego and my negativity have been turned down to zero. The divine and all of the higher powers in the heavenly realms have really shown me a lot, but when people are not on this journey, they don’t understand, and because I don’t give a reaction, that makes people more upset.

Also, if I do happen to argue, it wouldn’t even last 5 minutes; my body starts feeling really shaky and nervous. That’s one of the reasons why I do not like to argue or fight. I do not like confrontation. I’m a very humble and peaceful person.

Again, thank you so much for the article, and I wish you all of the luck and success. God bless.

  12. Oh Daizy, I’m so sorry to hear about your struggles! Thank you for commenting and for sharing your story, and I really hope you get to a better place quickly, you’ve been through a lot.
